Slow gauze of eternal hypo-presence is the ultimate microwave ooze that settles post-plastic baking. Seems this vibe was in the thick air of the basement Radical Cemetery laid this set of tunes down in, a murky, deeply retro-active wormhole where deposits of alkaline and asbestos brew in a coldrun of familiarity. Lurking in the shadows of doom sludge, "N.N.E." represents a wholly defiant concoction, as indebted to the harsh realities of "Dopesmoker," as it is the sentient mist of a screwed free jazz.

I'll be visiting some family down in the Ashville / Black Mountain area of North Carolina over this next week, and the Black Mountain College has been on my mind.

Founded in 1933 by John Andrew Rice, Theodore Dreiser, and other former faculty members of Rollins College, Black Mountain was experimental by nature and committed to an interdisciplinary approach, attracting a faculty that included many of America's leading visual artists, composers, poets, and designers, like Buckminster Fuller, who popularized and named the geodesic dome...

Buckminster Fuller met student Kenneth Snelson at Black Mountain, and the result was the first geodesic dome (improvised out of slats in the school's back yard); Merce Cunningham formed his dance company; and John Cage staged his first happening (the term itself is traceable to Cage's student Allan Kaprow, who applied it later to such events).

Among those who taught there in the 1940s and 1950s were:

I've had the chance to learn a lot about the process Annie Larson goes through while creating her knitwear. I was there when she first got her machine, diving into the world of machine knitting, and have had the opportunity to watch her develop her craft into what it is today. From the very start, I couldn't help but imagine the possibilities regarding the imagery and patterns involved in the knitting process, and have patiently awaited the chance to contribute.

In learning more about it, I came to realize how impossible all of my initial ideas most likely were. There are endless restrictions involved in creating functional knitwear patterns. In short, each color used is a physical and structural element to the garment being created. The frequency of a color, and its presence in each row and column plays an important role in the resulting structure of the knit. This line of knitwear is the initial exploration of the potentials that exist within these established restrictions. Watching the designs translate from basic grid drawings into the physical knits is amazing... the result is so drastically unique to itself, becoming this physical surface. Color palette is endlessly important - making or breaking a design. So cumbersome -- time consuming -- complicated -- well worth it. In the end, I realize that this first go at textile/knit design is just grazing the surface of possibility... obviously... but I'm excited to have gone through it, and in the future, come time and technology, I look forward to bringing it to the next level.

Last Fall, the talented and prolific designer Matthew Rezac invited me to work with him on creating MCAD's 2011-2012 Viewbook.

Much of the content traditionally contained within MCAD's viewbook is subject to change on a year to year basis, so the school has made an effort to instead house much of this information on their website where it can be updated as needed without prematurely rendering the viewbook obsolete. In an effort to retain the viewbook's impact as a substantial object, and to generate engaging content without relying on the institution's texts, we created hundreds of original illustrations and collages drawing from the school's identity, vast photo archive, and the student body itself.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
